PureVoice

In today’s connected home environment with Internet file sharing, video streaming, on-line gaming, Ooma’s PureVoice Technology delivers clear audio even if substandard calling conditions exist. Ooma PureVoice Technology is composed of four key components.

Advanced Voice Compression

Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that reduces bandwidth consumption by 60% over standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for all other online activities and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered properly by your ISP.

Wire-speed QoS

Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, preserving voice quality requires that those packets arrive on time. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.

Adaptive Redundancy

Packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - it can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.

Encrypted Calls

Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We use the same encryption technology governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.

Discover Ooma Premier

If you want to add a bundle of enhanced calling features that will get your home phone service firing on all cylinders, Ooma Telo includes a free 60-day trial to Ooma Premier, a suite of enhanced calling features. You can also add Ooma Premier to your service for $9.99/month or $119.99/year. If you sign up for a year, you'll have the option of retaining your current telephone number for free ($39.99 value), or receiving a free HD handset ($49.99 value). See the chart below for a full list of Ooma Premier features.
ooma Premier Subscription Features:
  • Advanced Voicemail Options for voicemail forwarding and added privacy
  • Instant Second Line for large households with busy phone lines
  • Personal Numbers for all family members so you'll always know who a call is for
  • Call Blocking and Community Blacklist to help rid yourself of persistent telemarketers
  • Multi-ring, which lets you forward your calls to your cell phone or any other phone you choose

You'll be able to enjoy the ultimate convenience of having your voicemails forwarded to e-mail, allowing you to check your phone messages from work. And for added privacy, you'll have the option of making any Ooma device a private extension.

Instant Second Line
If you share your house with a phone hog, Ooma's Instant Second Line feature presents a solution for you. When the line is already in use, you can simply pick up a second Ooma Handset and get a fresh dial tone. Up to two separate calls can be made simultaneously.

Program unique numbers and ring sounds for everyone in the family.
Personal Number
With an affordable Ooma Premier subscription, you gain access to the Personal Number feature. This feature allows you to create a unique phone number for everyone in the family. Multiple numbers can be mapped to the same handset, but you can make each number ring distinctively so you know who the call is for. Up to nine additional numbers are allowed.

Add Unwanted Callers to Your Blacklist
Ooma allows you to instantly add unwanted callers to your blocked list. If telemarketers are harassing you, use ooma Lounge to add them to your blacklist. You'll have the option to block future calls completely or send them straight to voicemail. The choice is yours.

Blacklist unwanted callers with Ooma Premier.
Community Blacklist
Harness the power of the Ooma community and protect yourself from unwanted callers before they've even tried to call you. If enough Ooma users have blocked a certain caller, Ooma will add this caller to the community blacklist. Combine this with Ooma's special spam-detecting algorithms, and you've got the ultimate telemarketer blacklist.

Multi-Ring
Constantly on the go? Multi-Ring takes call forwarding to the next level. Configure your Ooma number to simultaneously ring your home phone and mobile phone at the same time. Whether you're at home or on the road, you'll never miss a call.

Three-way Conference Calls
Need to make dinner plans with two of your friends? Ooma's got you covered. Once you're on a call, press the second-line button to make or take a second call. Press down both line buttons at once, and you've got yourself a conference call.

5 out of 5 stars Bought the New Telo unit.   September 7, 2010
Don Lockwood (Tucson, Arizona)

My sister has had an Ooma for over a year now without a single problem or complaint. Because of her experience, I bought one myself (the new Telo unit). Simply take every five star rating on Amazon for Ooma and add a big Ditto, from me. I cannot improve on all the other nice things that have been said. Ooma does exactly what it was designed to do and it does it amazingly well.

5 out of 5 stars Great devise - ingenious business plan   September 6, 2010
Jeff Jones (San Diego, CA)
As stated already many times the call quality and the technology behind it are first rate. I won't repeat what's already been said.

What impresses me even more is their simple yet very effective business model - sell a devise for $250 that other VOIP companies include for free (or around $15) and then claim that the customer gets free telephone service for life. So simple - yet after reading the reviews here - it works! Here's the math: Every 2.5 years the technology of the $250 devise will become outdated and the customer will buy another. $250 divided by 2.5 years equals $100 per year which is about the same as other VOIP offerings.

Here's the kicker: Features that other VOIP companies already include in their plan will cost you $10 per month with Ooma (caller ID with name, number blocking, 3 way calling, etc.). Now you are paying $220 per year for your "free" phone service. Geez, there really is one born every minute.

Even though it's far from being free, the call quality is excellent and I gave it 5 stars.

Jeff

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic performance PLUS huge cost savings.   September 4, 2010

I promised myself recently that I would actually start writing reviews to give back to the Community from which I have derived great benefit. I've been waiting for something I might be passionate about for my first review.... and boy is this it.

I happened to be stuck at Costco waiting for a prescription to fill so I wandered down the electronics section and saw the Ooma Telo on the shelf for $179.99. Although I'm a true technology freak and geek, I've always shied away going towards VoIP in place of my 'ol reliable POTS landline. Sure I've got a cell, but coverage is somewhat spotty where I live plus the wife loves the cordless phone form factor of our current Panasonic system. Add to this the fact that I have a home automation system which uses voice interface via my landline phone and I've just never been compelled to make the switch.

Out of curiosity, I picked up the Ooma Telo box and started to read the feature set. What caught my eye was unlimited calling in the US for free. Hmmmm... if that actually worked as advertised, I could theoretically kill my landline and save a good $60 a month. That would pay for the Telo in three months! So, since I still had time, I whipped out the Droid and starting surfing for feedback and reviews. To begin I came, of course to Amazon and then to my other primary source, Newegg. After some further research, I decided to give it a try. It is from Costco, right?! They'd take back my kids if I said I bought them there.

Installation was truly painless. I plugged it between my cable modem and router, logged into the website, and quickly had a new phone number ala Google Voice. You have the option to continue using your landline side-by-side, but I wanted to try a full-immersion test to see if this could really replace my landline. Fortunately, I have Call Forwarding service on my landline, so I set my landline number to forward to my new Ooma number so the device would be invisible to those who called my landline (outbound calls currently show my Ooma number on Caller ID). I wanted to do this first and foremost to keep the wife happy during my test period (the odds of her telling all her friends and family to use the new Ooma number were about zero) but also to see if others noticed the difference in call quality without knowing I had the device running.

I then began a test period where I would accept an incoming call and talk for awhile and then asked how the connection was without first telling the caller I was on VoIP. EVERY caller said the connection was perfect. No issues. They were all stunned when I told them this was an Internet call over my own old-fashion cordless handsets. That, in fact, was another huge factor in me giving the Telo a spin; the ability to use my existing phone system without having to buy anything else.

I additionally tried out some stress testing where I both uploaded and downloaded huge bandwidth-hogging files and made multiple calls during the process. Due to QOS priority with the Telo (I am just using the default settings), I had absolutely NO voice hiccups during the process.

There *are* some costs involved with the unit. For example, you'll have to pay the state and federal taxes on phone service. No way around that, but it is only a few dollars a month. In addition, if you want to port over your old landline number so everyone can still call you at the number through the Telo, there is a one-time $40 (I did that today, in fact). Once it is ported, you can cancel your home landline service. Further, there is a Premium package for $119 per year (or $9.99/month) which gives a slew of features you may or may not even need (3-way calling, free second line [although you need one of their handsets to take full advantage of it], voicemail to email, etc. etc. Getting my voice messages via email was enough for me to sign up for the $119.... which also included the porting of the landline number for free.

Overall I am extremely satisfied with the unit and look forward to saving the $50 a month or so that I've been spending on my landline.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!!!!!!!!!   September 4, 2010

I've now been up and running for about 3 weeks now and LOVE IT!!! I had my AT&T Home Land line Phone number transfered over to my OONA Box. This requires a FEE, but was worth it. I've had the phone number for 18+ years!!!
You can get a NEW number for FREE. My Phone bill was about $35 even though I hardly make any calls from that line, I have a Cell I normally used. Especially as I didn't want to pay for Long Distance calls, and so I used my Cell. With the OONA Box. My Phone calls over VIP sound BETTER!!! My Bill is now as low as $3.95 now which is paying for Phone Taxes and things like 911, and Lifeline and other garbage. For a Additional $9.95 a month you get a bunch of other features that may or not not be useful for you. I like having Call-ID now for free, which with my Masonic Wireless phone I also got, I programed All the Names and Phone Numbers, and my phone well Tell me now who's calling by Voice! Kind of cool. I like that I have no need to have my PC left on for it to work. If you disconnect your Home phone wiring from the outside phone company line, you can then plug the OOMA box into your phone line outlet and power all your other home phone line outlets. That's kind of nice.

The whole process to get connected up and my Number transfered was pretty Simple for the most part. The OOMA Box has a built in Router which was a issue with my setup. I was having problems with my Xbox 360 working correctly when I had my OOMA Box connected between my Cable Modem and my Router like they wanted. That's so your Voice Calls would have Higher Priority then your PC and other Apps. I have a D-Link Gaming Router with the same type of controls and so instead I setup the OOMA box how I needed it and Plugged it into my Router giving it the highest Priority over anything else and my Xbox 360 works just fine once again.

I have Unlimited Calling now anywhere in the U.S. and lower rates out of the U.S. For a fraction of what my Phone Bill Was. I was already paying for Broadband from Comcast, so why not make even more use out of it for what I'm paying? Who wants to be a sucker paying for VOIP from Comcast also, $19.95 a month first year and I think the normal price is $40 per year. Seems like a dumb move to me. Check all all the features for the extra $9.95 a month price and see if you need it over at [...]
