Sweet baby Jesus, we thank you for blessing Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with the talent to create a NASCAR comedy as hilarious as Talladega Nights. The so-called "Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is hardly flawless in fact it's not always firing on all cylinders but with comedy star Ferrell and director McKay still hot from the success of their previous comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, most of this 108-minute spoof of oval-track racing is so knee-slappin' funny that you can't help but surrender to the stupidity. |
Obviously, Ferrell's the shining star, and his portrayal of lead-footed pit-crew-member-turned-#1 NASCAR champion Ricky "I Wanna Go Fast" Bobby (how can you not love that name?) is spot-on perfect, righteously spoofing the entirety of NASCAR culture without insulting its oft-ridiculed roots in redneck bootlegging of a bygone era. You could even argue that Talladega Nights is truer to NASCAR than Tom Cruise's Days of Thunder, and it's certainly more entertaining, especially when you add John C. Reilly as Ricky's life-long pal, teammate, and eventual rival Cal Naughton, Jr. (together they're nicknamed "Shake 'n Bake"), and Sacha Baron Cohen (from Da Ali G Show and Borat) as gay French "Formula Un" driver-turned NASCAR rival Jean Girrard, to a stellar cast including Molly Shannon, Greg Germann, Amy Adams and Michael Clarke Duncan. Sure, it's mostly a showcase for Ferrell's loud, over-the-top antics and nonsensical non sequiturs (like cameo appearances by Elvis Costello and Mos Def), but with Ferrell behind the wheel, Talladega Nights rolls into victory lane with fuel to spare, and there's one final bit of comedy (with a tip of the hat to William Faulkner) for those who sit through the credits. --Jeff Shannon Stills from Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby(click for larger image) More NASCAR and Talladega Nights at Amazon.com The Calendar | On blu-ray | NASCAR on PSP | Our NASCAR Store | NASCAR The Imax Experience | Speed, Guts, and Glory Book |

Hilarious spoof of NASCAR July 28, 2010 M (I wait behind the wall, gnawing away at your reality) Like most of the other movies Will Ferrell is in that makes fun of various things (like the ones he did on ice-skating or being an anchorman), this is a funny twist and spoof on the chosen subject - in this instance NASCAR, the favorite sport of rednecks and white trash. His family dynamics are also entertaining to watch, like his kids cussing out Grandpa at the table, or his relationship with his best (and ex-best) friend. If you don't like Will Ferrell, you won't like this, but if you do like him and hate NASCAR, you will definitely enjoy this film.
Talladega Blight July 24, 2010 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I barely made it through the dinner scene where the young boys are being absolutely hideous to the grandfather. I usually like Will Ferrel's movies but this one is just not even worth viewing. It's sickening to see how many people actually think this crass and crude movie is actually funny. It deserves ZERO stars, but 1 is as low as you can go here giving a review. Absolute crap.
Talladega Nights June 28, 2010 iamMQL I cant complain at all about the price I paid for an unopened BluRay of Talladega Nights, its one of my favorite movies... My only issue is that it wasnt the Unrated Uncut version in the picture the copy that I recvd was the promotional copy that I am guessing was sold with someones PS3... It had no deleted scenes or any bells and whistles it was bare and I was almost shocked when I actually saw that it did have credits...
A pretty funny tale of a rise and fall and rise June 21, 2010 Viva (So. Cal.) Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly were perfectly cast here as best friends who grow up to be racers on the pro track. Along the way, there is marriage, lots of money being spent, two rotten kids, a sensible grandma, a crash that leads to paralyzing fear, and the return of a prodigal father who somehow gives his grown son a push in the right direction so he can race once again.
The story tends to drag on much longer than it needs to; this is unusual in a comedy. But it is still funny and worth watching for a great cast and some very funny dialogue.
If you don't watch this version then [beep] you May 14, 2010 S. Harris (Prattsburgh, New York) Just when you think the theatrical version of Talladega Nights was funny, the Unrated version is better. I couldn't help but to laugh more during this one with the 13 extra minutes, I've watched many comedies over the years, this honestly is in my Top 5 in that category. Although I watch NASCAR, it's still a fun movie to watch at least to me anyways, overall this movie gets 3.5 stars out of 5.
