We have choices and we need education September 5, 2010

There are so many books out there that scares you more than they educate and help you. This is one of the few rare books that educate you on both alternative methods to the dreaded over prescribed ivf path. I am a big believer that our body knows best. We might want to fight againt the outcome, but our body knows it's level of stress and how much more it can cope with additional responsibilities. So here in this books are two professionals that provide the reader and education to go out and ask the right questions with respect to accupuncture and ivf paths. This is your body and you need to lead, where as many ivf paths controls you. The informational was very educational, and. I learnt so much and what the options that are put there. Even if you choose the ivf path, the alternative path should also educate you on the fact that your food and environment can affect how your body functions. Remember, we eat too much processed food than we realize and that puts a lot of stress on the body. Loved this book for leading the reader in a gentle, non emotional journey to make choices not from reaction or from fear. Bravo.

This book is a breath of fresh air for those who are seeking a natural, healthy approach to getting pregnant. Organized, clear, positive, and enlightening, it really tells you what you need to know. It couldn't be a better blend of western and alternative medicine and it really gives you the tools and confidence to modify your lifestyle for the better. I had never read such an accurate description of my body type before this and I feel blessed to now know whay my body needs better than ever before. I have read it cover to cover and can honestly say that it is the best fertility book out there.

In just the introduction, I started to weep because I felt like someone in the field of medicine understood what I was going through. Right from the beginning, they talk about the roller coaster we all stand in line for - the fertility treatments that will give us a baby. It talks about the impatience of both the hopeful couple and the doctors who to try the next expensive procedure and then the next without questioning WHY it is needed. We don't ask too many questions, just continue to empty our banks and feed our bodies chemicals because we are desperate for a child.
After 1.5 years of trying to get pregnant naturally with Taking Charge of Your Fertility and the Clear Blue Easy monitor, we took a series of tests that didn't show anything wrong with me besides a small polyp. My OB/GYN put me on Clomid for 7 months for no reason other than I wasn't getting pregnant and it was the "miracle" drug. The 7th month I became suicidal and stopped on my own. When I decided to remove the polyp, my doctor asked if I wanted to go on Clomid, completely forgetting that I was on it for 7 months wreaking havoc on my usual happy body and soul. We then sought a fertility expert who discovered I was releasing immature eggs and prescribed Follistim and IUIs. 5 IUI's later and still nothing. IVF was the next step without anyone explaining why I needed it other than, "You aren't getting pregnant."
So I researched online and found this book. I finally, after almost 3 years of feeling helpless, feel I have control over my body and decisions again. I am following the very clear and user-friendly guides for my lifestyle and diet changes. What I love most is that I know WHY I'm doing it. I started acupuncture as well and I feel if I continue this way, I can conceive naturally because all along, I've never been convinced something is "wrong" with me.
As people said, it's a mixture of both Western and Eastern belief and medicine. I tried to read the Infertility Cure but by the time that was recommended to me, I was exhausted from drugs and a broken heart. I couldn't focus on the complexity of it. MAKING BABIES is an easy, super exciting read because you learn so much. I read over 200 pages in one sitting because it's accessible.
I will write an update a few months from now, but if you are hopeful for a child and your options have been decreased because of your doctor's opinions (or anyone for that matter), please invest in this book. I wish I read this before I started any of it, but am glad I bought it before I blindly leapt into IVF's.
I will also say that I contacted Jill Blakeway and heard back from her in a few hours. She is the co-author and incredibly dedicated to help us have a healthy baby. This book is written with love and is, I think, the best book of its kind out there.
Best of luck to all of you! I believe we have handed our power and dreams over to the doctors. I'm happy to take mine back.

I attribute my pregnancy to reading this book. The information was great and very easy to understand. The authors suggest that if you follow the advice they offer for 3 months you will likely become pregnant... and it worked for us! We had been trying for nearly 12 months total, but our 2nd cycle after reading the book we got our positive test results.
I highly recommend it!
